Fall Writing Frenzy

It’s that time of year again, when the fall arrives so does my favorite contest! I love the writing community and the talent that comes from this contest. Reading the creativity of others always inspires me. Hope you enjoy my story this year.

SILENCE

By Krista Legge (WC 194)

HONNNNNNKKKK! Jake’s ears vibrated.

BARK! BARK! BARK! Jake’s brain shook.

SCREEEEEECH! The sound pierced Jake’s whole body.

Sounds invaded Jake’s life, blocking the rest of the outside world. Covering his ears, he curled in a tight ball.

Jake stopped going outside. He stared out the window, wishing to go out but knowing the sounds would suffocate him.

Then on a beautiful Autumn day, his dad handed him something. Jake stared at the hard, clunky item. His dad took it from Jake’s hands and slipped it over his ears.

SILENCE!

The hum of the lights disappeared.

The whisper of the TV vanished.

Jake saw his dad’s mouth moving, but no sound.

Jake’s dad opened the front door and nodded his head. Jake looked at the outside world and tentatively stepped through the doorway. As he stood on the lawn, he turned his head from side to side.

No HONK.

No BARK.

No SCREECH.

Only SILENCE

He tilted his head up and felt the breeze brush his cheeks.

The warmth of the sun kissed his eyelids.

The scent of the leaves tickled his nose.

Sounds would not stop Jake from enjoying the outside world ever again.
